- Rose or Gulab [Botanical name – Rosa Damascena] is a perennial bushy shrub reaching approximately 1 to 2 meters in height with large, showy and colorful flowers. Several species and forms are cultivated in India, out of which Rosa Damascena with its red double flowers is the most important and is cultivated in rose gardens in several places in Bengal, Kashmir, Punjab etc.
- Rose is planted and cultivated all over the world also but the finest Rosa damascena is grown in Bulgaria and Turkey. The Rose Damascena is one of the most important species of Rosaceae family. The flowers are renowned for their fine fragrance, and are commercially harvested for rose oil (either "rose otto" or "rose absolute") used in perfumery and to make rose water and "rose concrete". The Rose flower petals are also edible which may be used to flavor food, as a garnish, as an herbal tea, and preserved in sugar as gulkand.
- As per Ayurveda Rose petals supports overall body cooling agent, healthy kidney functions and cardiac swelling. Rose petals help to promote skin wellness and refrigerant action. In Ayurveda Gulkand is said to be useful in Vitiated Pitta, heartburn, hyperacidity, burning sensation in intestine, urinary tract & as general tonic.
- Scientific study of the Rose plant shows presence of several components such as terpenes, glycosides, flavonoids, and anthocyanins that have beneficial effects on human health. The decoction of dried Rose petals was used as diuretic and recommended for reliving the fever, breast pain and menstrual problems.
